Chapter 14

Familiar Faces

They had made good time that morning; the road headed toward Alumin was busy, but nothing impeded their pace. They were allowed within city limits with no holdup by the guards who were preoccupied with handling outbound traffic.

Reza and Kaia could both feel a different energy since they left Alumin just a week earlier. Seldrin had not allowed for a stop on their journey, thinking it best to make it to the capitol building first to gather intel from more reputable sources rather than poll random passersby on what all the commotion was about.

Seldrin’s credentials were impeccable, each checkpoint within the judicial district allowing them to pass with only a few words from the general. It was clear he was known in the city, and once inside the grand capitol building that crafted, enforced, and interpreted law upheld by all surrounding kingdoms, he had been directed quickly to the clerk that processed cases such as Reza’s.

“General Seldrin, correct?” a spectacled man behind a clean marbled desk asked.

“Just so,” Seldrin confirmed.

As the judicial clerk thumbed through some papers, a white-robed man took note of the group and approached, standing behind the counter next to the clerk. Reza and Kaia recognized the man immediately, and by the way he returned their gaze, it was apparent that he recognized them. It was the faith worker from the synagogue who had found them in the inn and then took Reza to see Prophet Yunus—only now he wore White Cloak robes instead of Elendium’s traditional red and gold colors. His thin-framed, circular spectacles only seemed to narrow his squinting gaze further as he peered at Reza.

The clerk looked up, took note of the White Cloak’s presence, and then went back to find the file he had been searching for.

“Ah, yes, the attendants told me you were seeking an inquiry about some prosecution. This isn’t a small claim, correct? You wouldn’t be here if it were, I suppose. Are these the accused?” the man asked, looking at Reza and Kaia.

“Yes,” Seldrin said.

“Well, you can hand them over now if you wish. I’ll send for an Alumin security detail and hold them until their hearing time,” the clerk suggested. “Or you can see them to the lobby of the church yourself.”

“The church? What about the court?” Seldrin asked, his impatience rising.

“All legal cases are temporarily being held at the church of Elendium until further notice,” the clerk replied, as though it was not the first time he had said the line that day.

Seldrin attempted to keep his calm, though it was clear to everyone that his patience was wearing thin. “Why?” he asked.

The clerk sighed. “Orders from the governor-general himself.”

“That didn’t answer my question.”

“The judges have no complaints with it, so that means neither do we,” the clerk said, side-eyeing the faith worker who watched them like a bird of prey. “You can ask them yourself before or after the hearing if you’re that curious—if they have the time to chat on their break. Things have been quite busy this week with all the fuss over the relocation.
